Black Copper Marans
Marans originated in the seaport of Marans, France in the 1800s as travelers and seamen transported chickens. They were originally bred as fighting cocks, but along the line they became popular as barnyard birds. By the 1920s, the breed had been established in France. The Marans chickens were exported to England and in the last few decades to America.
Marans are a great meat bird, but they are renown for the dark chocolate eggs that they lay. The eggs at times are so dark, they come close to being black.
